Conservation

The Park's Conservation Services Department is dedicated to protecting and restoring the Gorongosa ecosystem and enforcing Park rules and policy. We focus on these areas:

Ecosystem Management - We continuously monitor the Park for immediate threats and environmental change over time. Some of the largest threats include low herbivore numbers (such as buffalos, wildebeest, and zebras), deforestation on Mount Gorongosa, and fires set by local farmers. More>

Wildlife Management - We are reintroducing a variety of species, especially three bulk grazers-- wildebeest, buffalo, and zebra--that will help restore the Park's grassland and savannas. We are monitoring wildlife populations to ensure that they remain viable. Our veterinary team is watching for outbreaks of wildlife disease and treating injured animals. More>

Law Enforcement - We have a dedicated team of law enforcement officers working to protect the Park from ecological threats and to keep visitors safe. They endeavor to stop illegal hunting, illegal fishing, and deforestation. More>

Help Replant Trees

nullRapid deforestation threatens Mount Gorongosa, but there is still hope. We are working to restore the mountain's forests and you can help.
